Parks and Everly got kites from Grandma for Easter and since then they have been pining to fly them. They run around the neighborhood holding their kites as high as possible, Parks ties it to his bike every couple of days and if there is a rustle in the leaves, they are grabbing their kites and running outside.
Today the glorious sun was shining, the wind was intermittently blowing at our house, and the kites were out in full force. A full half hour after I should have been done with dinner (and I hadn't started yet), we threw caution to the wind (ha!) and grabbed the kites and I drove them down to the harbor where there are always kite enthusiasts of all ages flying some (much fancier) kites.
Parker and Everly unzipped their keychain kites, started to unwrap the string, and the kites took off. I wish I had been able to capture that moment of the first time they really flew a kite. On their own. The wind grabbing and pulling the string, they held tighter to the handle and they beamed. They let it go further and further into the sky and the pride surrounding that kite flying was palpable.
I drove them through the pizza drive through and grabbed a pizza to bake at home about 5 minutes before they're normally in bed. And it was so worth it. And as Parker was falling asleep tonight he mumbled and whispered "Let's go fly a kite. Tomorrow."
